Public Meeting Scheduled by NCDOT Regarding Bridge Project
August 03, 2021
The NC Department of Transportation has scheduled a Public Meeting regarding the Smoky Mountain Expressway Improvement project, resulting in a temporary closure of Exit 103 onto US-19 and the on-ramp for US-23/74. This meeting will take place on Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 5 pm - 7 pm, in the Harrell Center Auditorium located downstairs from Junaluska Gifts and Grounds.
According to NCDOT, the purpose of this project is to improve safety and overall congestion. The improvements will include widening the existing US-23/74 roadway, reconfiguring the US-19 on-ramp from left-hand entering to right-hand entering onto US-23/74, and replacing the dual bridges on US-73/74 over Richland Creek with a single structure.
A published website offers project and construction phasing maps, a flyover video showing the completed work, and other useful resources. Residents can sign up for the project email list to receive updates and other information from NCDOT. The public is encouraged to submit comments or questions by September 2, 2021, to Smoky-Mt-Expressway@PublicInput.com or call (984) 205-6615 (Access Code: 2219). Residents can also directly submit comments through a form on the project website.
Although Lake Junaluska Assembly Public Works is not directly involved in the project, we strive to maintain close contact with project staff and stay up-to-date on new developments and information. We will continue to share news regarding this project through our website and the Junaluskans' email service. If you have questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact the Public Works office at (828) 452-5911 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
